From BroadBand to "BIG Band"...the Internet revolution is still under way...

GENEVA: Scientists at CERN– the world's biggest particle physics laboratory, where Tim Berners-Lee (pictured) originally conceived the internet – claim to have produced a computer system that operates at 10,000 times the speed of a normal broadband connection, and which could “revolutionise” modern communications.

The centre's new “grid” will be switched on later this year after seven years of development, and the long-term communications benefits could include making high-definition video calls for the current price of a landline phone call, and the ability to download full-length movies in seconds.

The breakthrough is an offshoot of CERN's particle physics experiment – due to begin later this year in an attempt to replicate the Big Bang – which is capable of producing so much annual data that it would cause an online collapse.

Instead Cern has come up with "the grid" – a "parallel internet" which will capture data from the experiment using fibre optic cables, and have 200,000 servers spread across the world, including in the US, UK, Middle East and Canada, operating within the next two years.

It is not expected to be offered to domestic internet users, but telecoms companies are already adopting elements of its technology. In the future the technology will be made available to academics including astronomers and molecular biologists.

Says the project's technical director, Professor Tony Doyle: “Holographic video conferencing is not that far away. Online gaming could evolve to include many thousands of people, and social networking could become the main way we communicate”.

“The history of the internet shows you cannot predict its real impacts, but we know they will be huge”.

2010: l'Internet pour Tous !

Ce dernier jeudi, j'ai participié à la Conférence de Presse de Renaissance Numérique, association dont Crmmetrix fait parti des membres fondateurs aux côtés d'autres acteurs économiques et chercheurs de l'Internet Français (les autres membres fondateurs sont enre autres Google, Yahoo, Club-Internet, etc.).

Premier grand chantier de l'association la publication d'un livre blanc interpellant les politiques sur le fait que la France est en retard. Nous proposons 15 mesures. L'objectif: l'Internet pour tous dès 2010.(Pour télécharger le livre blanc: 2010, L'Internet pour Tous.)

La conférence de presse est un vrai succès pusique de nombreux journalistes s'étaient déplacés et déjà la presse et les médias ont largement relayé, aux politiques de prendre en compte nos mesures, toutes réalistes, peu chères, et devant permettre de proposer à tous les Français un accès Internet digne de ce nom dès 2010.

J'ai personellement eu l'occasion de présenter la mesure 8: L'internet haut débit pour tous...partout. Cette mesure fait référence à la fracture géographique qui existe et qui tend à opposer Internet des villes d'un côté, et Internet des champs de l'autre. Favorisons l'égalité d'accès pour tous !

Citoyens Internautes avançons ensemble pour que les politiques...Ecoutent! (comme démontré par le baromètre de l'Ecoute et de la Participation, ils en ont bien besoin...)

Why make things complicated when they are simple? An example about Web Analytics

This morning, a simple, yet interesting article from Jason Barby on Clikck Z about the troubles that the Web Analytics Industry faces to make things "simple" enough for marketers to understand what they need to understand about web analytics. Jason is using the example of asking his 6 year old son, this made me smile, as I do so often with my kids as well to get their understanding about things and make sure that I am able to communicate properly as well... Trust me, not easy at all, try it, if you do not have kids ask someone that does not know anything about the subject and you will see.

In addition, I also liked Jason's son reactions, rather than inducing things from what people "do", sometimes, directly asking them what they think and what they have to say is better to get the insights from the source. In fact, the two are complementary...So use more feedback surveys to LISTEN to your website visitors rather than to "watch" them only. You will make their online experience only better and you will develop a stronger relationship with them.

BaroPolitiques: L'Echo du Web seul à prédire le large succès de Ségolène Royal !

Contrairement à la totalité des sondages, une nouvelle fois l'Echo du Web du BaroPolitiques prédisait déjà au 3/11 la large victoire de Ségolène Royal devant ses concurrents Laurent Fabius et DSK, ci-dessous les Share Of Voice des candidats à la Présidentielle de 2007...

Sur les 3 présidentiables socialistes, Ségolène Royal représentait déjà au 3 Novembre 2006 près de 64% des parts de voies, Laurent Fabius 19,6%, et DSK 16,3%.

Fait remarquable également, Ségolène Royal reprend la tête face à Nicolas Sarkozy... et s'avère être la seule à véritablement écarter LePen d'une éventuelle présence au 2ème tour... alors que les 2 autres candidats se retouvaient derrière LePen... Les militants du parti socialiste auraient-ils consulté l'écho du web du BaroPolitiques avant de se rendre aux urnes?

Google Software To Check Truth Of Politician's Statements

"IMAGINE BEING ABLE TO CHECK instantly if politicians were telling the truth. That is the sort of service Google Inc. boss Eric Schmidt believes the Internet will offer within five years. Politicians don't yet appreciate the impact of the online world, which will also affect the outcome of elections, Schmidt told the Financial Times yesterday. He predicted that "truth predictor" software would, within five years, "hold politicians to account." People would be able to use programs to check seemingly factual statements against historical data to determine whether they were correct."

MySpace Is Everyone’s Space

"According to a recent Hitwise competitive intelligence study, MySpace.com passed Yahoo! Mail in the first week of July, becoming the number one ranked website in the U.S. based on market share of visits. And, among Social Networking sites in June 2006, MySpace accounted for 79.9 percent of the total market share of visits.

Bill Tancer, general manager of Global Research at Hitwise, said “MySpace continues its meteoric rise, to now claim the number one spot for all Internet visits in the U.S. …The fact that MySpace was virtually unknown by the mainstream Internet users two years ago and now claims the top position, demonstrates how hyper-competitive the Internet really is.”

Now the Times of India!

Not sure this will happen soon again, but as it currently happens, it is worth a post and a story...

Indeed, after the International Herald Tribune, NY Times yesterday, today it is the Times of India that published the article from Thomas Crampton (thank you again Tom!).

Of course, I did not track it, my good friends from Array Digital in Mumbai found the article today...I hope they see in this the importance of their work developing our mining technology, and am glad and proud for them to have the whole team in Mumbai also be part of this story! Thanks guys, and continue!

What I found even more amazing, is that all this press coverage will not have happened without BLOGS! This is a story in itself, really inspiring! Let me explain...

It all started only 2.5 weeks ago with a pre-release of first inisghts results of Baroblogs: The Barometer of Blogosphere...on this blog... what I did then, is push the news to fellow friends bloggers... (look at the level of mentions of baroblogs on Technorati to date, in this chart am not counting mentions of crmmetrix nor "crm metrix" nor my name, simply baroblogs!) and since the news was relating to blogging... in France...and apparently was carrying some good and new insights, people started blogging about it... even the most famous French Blogger: Loïc Lemeur.

Thank you Loïc (and to all bloggers from France, US, Germany, Austria, Italy, India, Asia at large... that carried the news), as your post on your blog got Tom's attention that called me for an interview to then have the honor to be mentioned in IHT, NY Times and today Times of India!

Amazing, in less than 3 weeks, we got more coverage than in... 5 years... simply thanks to the power of social media...or word of mouth...or consumer generated media...all this thanks to blogs! The ones that still think that blogs, CGM, online WOM are fades... please read this!

Thank you all and more than ever I think that Blogs start conversations and help markets to be "smarter"... we are very much in the age of the ClueTrain Manifesto.
